What is this, and is it for me?
Inhaled essential oils aren't folklore. A network meta-analysis of 44 randomized trials found aromatherapy lowered heart rate by 3.4 bpm and supported a calmer state within 10 to 30 minutes. This is the most scent-forward jar we make.
- Adults buying a jar for the scent first and the base second
- Anyone who wants magnesium on skin as part of the daily routine
- Practitioners who want a clean topical to hand a patient: seven ingredients, no fillers, no synthetic fragrance
- Across the chest, so the scent stays with you. Bottoms of the feet at night if you want it on more skin.
- Start with a thin layer, a teaspoon or less. A little goes a long way.
- Patch test a small area and give it 24 hours before you make it a daily habit.
- We recommend using it around your chest for the aromatic side or on the bottom of your feet for maximum absorption throughout the entire body.
- Most absorptive areas of the body: bottom of the feet hits the entire body for men and women. Thighs are the second most absorptive spot for women. Forearms are the second most absorptive spot for men. Use these if you need to use more lotion and the feet or other areas are already covered.
- All of our Magnesium/MSM Lotions are safe for any adult to use. They should also be safe for just about any 5-12 year old. For our children under 2 years old, we normally only use the Zanex or Sleep Zzz in very small amounts. Zanex and Sleep Zzz are the only lotions we recommend for pregnancy, but all the lotions are safe for breastfeeding.
- These lotions last a long time, but since I use absolutely no fillers, it's best to warm the lotion back up and mix it back together from time to time if you aren't using all the lotion before it separates. This will happen more often if the lotion is stored in a bathroom setting where temperatures fluctuate. Set the jar in a bowl of hot water for 20 minutes at a time until it melts down, then mix it with a milk frother. Sometimes you'll have to warm it up more than once to get it soft enough to mix. Generally, keep it stored in a cool, dry place and mix it back together if it does separate. For potency, use this lotion within 12 months of opening it.
- Scent is the point. Our Happy lotion is meant to do just that: inspire good feelings for you and those around you. The aromatics on this one are incredible. Some of the lotions are meant to hit for the topical goodness, and this one doesn't lack there, but where this lotion shines is definitely in the aromatics.
- Calming aroma. A network meta-analysis of 44 randomized trials found inhaled essential oils settle heart rate and support a calmer state, with 10 to 30 minutes of exposure doing the most.
- Same base as the rest. Our entire lineup of Magnesium and MSM Lotions has a base of mostly shea butter, hemp seed oil, Zechstein magnesium, and MSM, so you can use any of them topically to support pain, discomfort, tight muscles, joint issues, low magnesium, cramps, energy, and so much more. There is about 280 mg of magnesium in each teaspoon of lotion.
- Magnesium relaxes tissues, so applying this lotion to any areas with pain, discomfort, tension, etc., should support them. Magnesium is responsible for 3,751 proteins/enzymes, and therefore we can expect using this lotion will support those.
- Straight past the gut. Magnesium is also used to make every unit of our energy, so using it topically skips the digestive tract and deposits the magnesium directly into our blood. This is extremely helpful for those who can't handle much magnesium orally.
- What clients tell us. Many clients report feedback about the support it gives to their skin, energy, gut, anxiety, irritability, and overall mood, amongst other things.

Sourcing & making
Every jar in this line is the same base: organic shea butter, lab-tested hemp seed oil, genuine Zechstein magnesium chloride, my deuterium-depleted distilled water, MSM, and beeswax. The only difference between the lotions is the essential oil blend in each one. I source high-grade oils and blend specific oils to help with certain ailments. Beeswax holds the water and butter phases together, so there is no synthetic emulsifier in it.

Essential Oil Blend
Essential oils and calm: network meta-analysis, 2023
Frontiers in Public Health · 2023 · meta-analysis · n=44 RCTs, 3,419 participants
A network meta-analysis of 44 randomized trials in 3,419 people found essential-oil aromatherapy lowered State (WMD -6.63) and Trait (WMD -4.97) Anxiety Inventory scores and reduced systolic blood pressure by 6.83 mmHg and heart rate by 3.43 bpm, with 10-30 minutes of exposure producing the most consistent effect.
Genuine Zechstein Magnesium Chloride (magnesium)
Magnesium and subjective stress review, 2017
Nutrients · 2017 · systematic review · n=18 studies
A systematic review of 18 studies found the existing evidence suggestive of a beneficial effect of magnesium supplementation on subjective anxiety in anxiety-vulnerable groups, while judging the overall quality of that evidence to be poor.
Genuine Zechstein Magnesium Chloride (transdermal magnesium)
Effect of transdermal magnesium cream on serum and urinary magnesium levels in humans: A pilot study
PLOS ONE · 2017 · RCT · n=25 enrolled, 24 completed
In a single-blind, parallel-group pilot trial of 25 adults, applying a magnesium cream supplying 56 mg of magnesium daily for two weeks raised serum magnesium by 8.54% versus 2.6% with placebo, reaching statistical significance only in the non-athlete subgroup.
Evidence note: Two strands of human evidence sit behind this jar: a 2023 network meta-analysis of 44 randomized trials and 3,419 participants on essential-oil inhalation and anxiety outcomes, and a systematic review of 18 magnesium studies pointing the same direction on subjective anxiety and stress while calling for better-controlled trials. The transdermal side rests on a 25-person cream pilot measuring an 8.54% serum rise versus 2.6% for placebo. All of it describes the ingredient categories; this blend's oils are proprietary, so a trial of the blend itself is what would make it product-specific.
FAQ
What does it smell like?
The aromatics on this one are incredible, and the smell is the key focus of this jar. Catch a smell of it through the day and the mood lifts. Underneath it is the same magnesium, MSM, shea butter and hemp seed oil base as the rest.
What can I expect?
This lotion brings mixed feedback due to the fact that the smell is the key focus of this lotion. I wonder if, over time, we will find more specific feedback on what this works the best with emotion-wise. You may feel like certain moods are resolved whenever you get a smell of this, but then again, you may find some that don't have that same effect. Please do let us know!
Where should I put it?
Chest, so the scent stays with you, or the bottoms of the feet at night. A thin layer is enough.
How much magnesium gets through skin?
A randomized trial saw serum magnesium rise after two weeks of daily magnesium cream. People use it for how it feels on tired muscles and skin - work it into a shoulder, a calf, or the bottoms of the feet.
Why did my jar separate?
No fillers and no heavy emulsifier, so the water and butter phases drift apart, faster in a warm bathroom. Sit the jar in hot water about 20 minutes, then remix with a milk frother. Repeat if it's still firm. Nothing is wrong with it.
Can kids use it? What about pregnancy?
All of our Magnesium/MSM Lotions are safe for any adult to use.
Pairs well with
- Love In The Air Lotion — the warmer evening scent on the same base
- Peaceful Prayer Lotion — the grounding, resinous one
- BOMB Bath Salts — magnesium in the tub, same mineral, different route

- For external use only. Keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes, and off broken or freshly shaved skin, where magnesium chloride commonly stings.
- Generally, keep it stored in a cool, dry place and mix it back together if it does separate. Separation is normal since I use absolutely no fillers; rewarm and remix rather than assuming it spoiled. For potency, use this lotion within 12 months of opening it.
