What is this, and is it for me?
A four-week study applying magnesium chloride to arms and legs twice daily reported better day-to-day comfort and function, and randomized trials of MSM report the same for joints after hard effort. Both are in this jar, in a shea butter base.
- People with physically demanding work who finish the day sore
- Anyone pairing a lotion with foam rolling, stretching or manual therapy
- Practitioners looking for one jar to hand most patients first
- Use this anywhere you feel pain or discomfort in your muscular or skeletal body.
- If using this for pain or discomfort, use it anywhere you feel it in your muscular or skeletal body. Then get to my free foam rolling and stretching videos - Josh and Sarah's Foam Rolling and Stretching School.
- Treat soreness as information too. If the same spot keeps talking, something upstream is out of alignment.
- Start with a thin layer, a teaspoon or less. A little goes a long way.
- Patch test a small area and give it 24 hours before you make it a daily habit.
- BY POPULAR DEMAND, ALL of our Magnesium/MSM lotions come in High Potency for the same low price. Get all the best benefits in any of our lotions.
- We recommend using it around your chest for the aromatic side or on the bottom of your feet for maximum absorption throughout the entire body.
- Most absorptive areas of the body: bottom of the feet hits the entire body for men and women. Thighs are the second most absorptive spot for women. Forearms are the second most absorptive spot for men. Use these if you need to use more lotion and the feet or other areas are already covered.
- All of our Magnesium/MSM Lotions are safe for any adult to use. They should also be safe for just about any 5-12 year old. For our children under 2 years old, we normally only use the Zanex or Sleep Zzz in very small amounts. Zanex and Sleep Zzz are the only lotions we recommend for pregnancy, but all the lotions are safe for breastfeeding.
- These lotions last a long time, but since I use absolutely no fillers, it's best to warm the lotion back up and mix it back together from time to time if you aren't using all the lotion before it separates. Sit the jar in a bowl of hot water for 20 minutes at a time until it melts down, then mix it with a milk frother. Sometimes you'll have to warm it up more than once to get it soft enough to mix. Generally, keep it stored in a cool, dry place and mix it back together if it does separate. For potency, use this lotion within 12 months of opening it.
- It's the lotion that changed the game for my physical therapy sessions! This lotion was designed specifically for tension, pain, and discomfort in your muscular and skeletal body, but also to support your emotions and the nervous system with the calming oils. Many times we just need to relax for things to feel significantly better.
- Minty and calming at once. The blend of oils I chose for this is like a minty version of the famous Young Living essential oil blend called "Peace and Calming," so if you are familiar with that smell, you will feel right at home with this blend. Deep Tissue is the same idea at a higher concentration.
- The same Magnesium/MSM base as the whole line. Mostly shea butter, hemp seed oil, Zechstein magnesium, and MSM, so you can use any of them topically to support pain, discomfort, tight muscles, joint issues, low magnesium, cramps, energy, and so much more. There is about 280 mg of magnesium in each teaspoon of lotion.
- MSM for joint and muscle comfort. Randomized trials of oral MSM report better everyday physical function and lower pain scores after hard effort. That's the sulfur in this base.
- Magnesium chloride on the limbs. A four-week study applying magnesium chloride to arms and legs twice daily reported improved day-to-day comfort and function scores. See the research drop-down.
- Pair it with the work. Although this lotion has reviews that say it can support pain, I like to keep everyone realistic: use this when you do feel pain in hopes that the pain feels better for that moment, but most importantly, use that as a signal that there is something in that region either out of alignment or impinged, and you need to get to my free foam rolling and stretching videos - Josh and Sarah's Foam Rolling and Stretching School.
- Magnesium relaxes tissues, so applying this lotion to any areas with pain, discomfort, tension, etc., should support them. Magnesium is responsible for 3751 proteins/enzymes, and therefore we can expect using this lotion will support those.
- Straight past the gut. Magnesium is also used to make every unit of our energy, so using it topically skips the digestive tract and deposits the magnesium directly into our blood. This is extremely helpful for those who can't handle much magnesium orally.
- What clients tell us. Many clients report feedback about the support it gives to their skin, energy, gut, anxiety, irritability, and overall mood, amongst other things.

Sourcing & making
Every jar in this line is the same base: organic shea butter, lab-tested hemp seed oil, genuine Zechstein magnesium chloride, my deuterium-depleted distilled water, MSM, and beeswax. The only difference between the lotions is the essential oil blend in each one. I source high-grade oils and blend specific oils to help with certain ailments. Beeswax holds the water and butter phases together, so there is no synthetic emulsifier in it.

The research behind the ingredients

Genuine Zechstein Magnesium Chloride (transdermal magnesium)
Transdermal magnesium chloride feasibility study, 2015
Journal of Integrative Medicine · 2015 · cohort · n=40 enrolled, 24 completed
In a four-week single-arm feasibility study of 40 women with fibromyalgia (24 completed), magnesium chloride spray applied to the arms and legs twice daily improved Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire subscale and total scores at weeks 2 and 4 (total score P=0.001).
MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)
MSM knee comfort randomized trial, 2011
BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine · 2011 · RCT · n=49
In a 12-week double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial of 49 adults with knee osteoarthritis, 3.375 g/day of oral MSM improved WOMAC physical-function and total scores versus placebo, although the authors described the improvements as small.
MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)
Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition · 2017 · RCT · n=22 completed
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial of 22 half-marathon runners, 3 g/day of MSM for 21 days before and two days after the race reduced post-race muscle and joint pain by a clinically meaningful margin that did not reach statistical significance, with no change in oxidative-stress or muscle-damage markers.
Evidence note: MSM has two randomized trials behind joint and post-exercise comfort, and magnesium chloride applied to arms and legs twice daily for four weeks has a single-arm feasibility study reporting improved comfort and function scores. The MSM trials used oral MSM and the magnesium study used a different product, so read them as evidence for the ingredients rather than for this jar. Disclosing the oils would let the aromatic side be cited too.
FAQ
What does it smell like?
The blend of oils I chose for this is like a minty version of the famous Young Living essential oil blend called "Peace and Calming," so if you are familiar with that smell, you will feel right at home with this blend. If you want the same idea stronger, that's Deep Tissue.
Does it replace stretching?
Use both. Josh spent his physical therapy career on foam rolling and stretching, and that's what changes how a body moves. This is the comfortable part of that routine - work it in, then get to the rolling and stretching.
How much magnesium gets through skin?
A randomized trial saw serum magnesium rise after two weeks of daily magnesium cream. People use it for how it feels on tired muscles and skin - work it into a shoulder, a calf, or the bottoms of the feet.
Why did my jar separate?
No fillers and no heavy emulsifier, so the water and butter phases drift apart, faster in a warm bathroom. Sit the jar in hot water about 20 minutes, then remix with a milk frother. Repeat if it's still firm. Nothing is wrong with it.
Can kids use it? What about pregnancy?
All of our Magnesium/MSM Lotions are safe for any adult to use.
Pairs well with
- That ALL Day Deep Tissue — the same idea, stronger
- Bomb Bath Salts — for the soak on the same evening
- Magnesium Bis-Glycinate — the reliable magnesium number, in the evening
Cautions
- All of our Magnesium/MSM Lotions are safe for any adult to use. They should also be safe for just about any 5-12 year old.
- However, for our children under 2 years old, we normally only use the Zanex or Sleep Zzz in very small amounts.
- Zanex and Sleep Zzz are the only lotions we recommend for pregnancy, but all the lotions are safe for breastfeeding.
- For external use only. Keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes, and off broken or freshly shaved skin, where magnesium chloride commonly stings.
- Generally, keep it stored in a cool, dry place and mix it back together if it does separate; separation happens more often in a bathroom setting where temperatures fluctuate. For potency, use this lotion within 12 months of opening it.
