What is this, and is it for me?
A network meta-analysis of 44 inhalation trials found essential-oil aroma lowered heart rate and supported a calmer response to daily stress. A separate review of 18 magnesium studies pointed the same direction. Both are in this jar, on the calmest blend Josh has made.
- Adults who want a wind-down habit with a scent attached to it
- Households already using the sleep jars who want a daytime-to-evening bridge
- Anyone who wants the calmest smell in the line and doesn't need the valerian
- Chest if the scent is what you're after. Bottoms of the feet for the whole-body version.
- Most people use it in the last hour of the evening, at the same time each night.
- Start with a thin layer, a teaspoon or less. A little goes a long way.
- Patch test a small area and give it 24 hours before you make it a daily habit.
- We recommend using it around your chest for the aromatic side or on the bottom of your feet for maximum absorption throughout the entire body.
- Most absorptive areas of the body: bottom of the feet hits the entire body for men and women. Thighs are the second most absorptive spot for women. Forearms are the second most absorptive spot for men. Use these if you need to use more lotion and the feet or other areas are already covered.
- These lotions last a long time, but since I use absolutely no fillers, it's best to warm the lotion back up and mix it back together from time to time if you aren't using all the lotion before it separates. This will happen more often if the lotion is stored in a bathroom setting where temperatures fluctuate up and down more often. Sit the jar in a bowl of hot water for 20 minutes at a time until it melts down, then mix it with a milk frother. Sometimes you'll have to warm it up more than once to get it soft enough to mix. Keep it stored in a cool, dry place. For potency, use this lotion within 12 months of opening it.
- A powerful alternative, not an attachment. I'm not here to attach other products or drugs in the world; there are plenty of people doing that already. I'm here to make products that provide a powerful alternative to many things on the market.
- The calming oils, together. This lotion has all the essential oils known to support calming the nervous system. We know magnesium relaxes many things in the body and can cause a calm itself, so the combination of the two works very well.
- The same Magnesium/MSM base as the whole line. Mostly shea butter, hemp seed oil, Zechstein magnesium, and MSM, so you can use any of them topically to support pain, discomfort, tight muscles, joint issues, low magnesium, cramps, energy, and so much more.
- Magnesium relaxes tissues, so applying this lotion to any areas with pain, discomfort, tension, etc., should support them. Magnesium is responsible for 3751 protein/enzymes, and therefore, we can expect using this lotion will support those. It's also used to make every unit of our energy, so using it topically skips the digestive tract and deposits the magnesium directly into our blood. This is extremely helpful for those who can't handle much magnesium orally.
- What clients tell us. Many clients report feedback about the support it gives to their skin, energy, gut, anxiety, irritability, and overall mood, amongst other things.
- Magnesium and everyday stress. A systematic review of 18 studies found magnesium supplementation supported a calmer response to everyday stress in stress-sensitive groups; the authors called for larger, better-controlled trials. See the research drop-down.
- One of the two house blends. This and Sleep Zzz are the only blends Josh's family uses in pregnancy, and in very small amounts for under-2s.
- And it just smells good. This is HANDS DOWN the best smell I have ever smelled. I couldn't believe ABBA blessed me to come up with this smell. Let me know what you think.

Sourcing & making
Every jar in this line is the same base: organic shea butter, lab-tested hemp seed oil, genuine Zechstein magnesium chloride, my deuterium-depleted distilled water, MSM, and beeswax. The only difference between the lotions is the essential oil blend in each one. I source high-grade oils and blend specific oils to help with certain ailments. Beeswax holds the water and butter phases together, so there is no synthetic emulsifier in it.

Essential Oil Blend
Essential oils and calm: network meta-analysis, 2023
Frontiers in Public Health · 2023 · meta-analysis · n=44 RCTs, 3,419 participants
A network meta-analysis of 44 randomized trials in 3,419 people found essential-oil aromatherapy lowered State (WMD -6.63) and Trait (WMD -4.97) Anxiety Inventory scores and reduced systolic blood pressure by 6.83 mmHg and heart rate by 3.43 bpm, with 10-30 minutes of exposure producing the most consistent effect.
Genuine Zechstein Magnesium Chloride (magnesium)
Magnesium and subjective stress review, 2017
Nutrients · 2017 · systematic review · n=18 studies
A systematic review of 18 studies found the existing evidence suggestive of a beneficial effect of magnesium supplementation on subjective anxiety in anxiety-vulnerable groups, while judging the overall quality of that evidence to be poor.
Genuine Zechstein Magnesium Chloride (transdermal magnesium)
Effect of transdermal magnesium cream on serum and urinary magnesium levels in humans: A pilot study
PLOS ONE · 2017 · RCT · n=25 enrolled, 24 completed
In a single-blind, parallel-group pilot trial of 25 adults, applying a magnesium cream supplying 56 mg of magnesium daily for two weeks raised serum magnesium by 8.54% versus 2.6% with placebo, reaching statistical significance only in the non-athlete subgroup.
Evidence note: A 44-trial network meta-analysis supports aromatic inhalation for a calmer state, and a systematic review of 18 studies points the same direction for magnesium while calling for larger, better-controlled trials. All of it is ingredient-level: it describes what these ingredients do, not a comparison with any medication, and this blend's oils would need disclosing to be cited directly.
FAQ
What is this actually for?
The end of the day. It's our calming evening blend on the shared magnesium and MSM base, on the chest for the smell or the bottoms of the feet for everything else.
How much magnesium gets through skin?
A randomized trial saw serum magnesium rise after two weeks of daily magnesium cream. People use it for how it feels on tired muscles and skin - work it into a shoulder, a calf, or the bottoms of the feet.
Why did my jar separate?
No fillers and no heavy emulsifier, so the water and butter phases drift apart, faster in a warm bathroom. Sit the jar in hot water about 20 minutes, then remix with a milk frother. Repeat if it's still firm. Nothing is wrong with it.
Can kids use it? What about pregnancy?
All of our Magnesium/MSM Lotions are safe for any adult to use. They should also be safe for just about any 5-12 year old. For our children under 2 years old, we normally only use the Zanex or Sleep Zzz in very small amounts. Zanex and Sleep Zzz are the only lotions we recommend for pregnancy, but all the lotions are safe for breastfeeding.
Pairs well with
- That ALL Night Sleep Zzz — the same evening, closer to bed
- That ALL Day Peaceful Prayer — another quiet blend
- Magnesium Bis-Glycinate — the reliable magnesium number, in the evening

- For external use only. Keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes, and off broken or freshly shaved skin, where magnesium chloride commonly stings.
- Store cool and dry, out of a steamy bathroom. Separation is normal in a filler-free lotion; rewarm and remix rather than assuming it spoiled. Use within 12 months of opening.
