What is this, and is it for me?
A 60-study meta-analysis in nearly 6,900 people found valerian supported subjective sleep quality, and a separate meta-analysis found magnesium shortened time to fall asleep by about 17 minutes. This lotion has 10 drops of valerian oil, on a Zechstein magnesium base.
- Adults whose bedtime and wake time have drifted and who want to anchor them
- People who already use Sleep Zzz and want something heavier for a stretch
- Anyone who wants the valerian load stated in drops instead of hidden in a blend
- Sleep lotions are best following the bottom of the foot method for the entire body and then using the list below on what is most absorptive.
- Add enough to the bottom of the feet to where they have enough but aren't greasy, and if you need more, use the list below for another area to add it to.
- Start with a thin layer, a teaspoon or less. A little goes a long way.
- Patch test a small area and give it 24 hours before you make it a daily habit.
- We recommend using it around your chest for the aromatic side or on the bottom of your feet for maximum absorption throughout the entire body.
- Most absorptive areas of the body: bottom of the feet hits the entire body for men and women. Thighs are the second most absorptive spot for women. Forearms are the second most absorptive spot for men. Use these if you need to use more lotion and the feet or other areas are already covered.
- All of our Magnesium/MSM Lotions are safe for any adult to use. They should also be safe for just about any 5-12 year old. For our children under 2 years old, we normally only use the Zanex or Sleep Zzz in very small amounts. Zanex and Sleep Zzz are the only lotions we recommend for pregnancy, but all the lotions are safe for breastfeeding.
- These lotions last a long time, but since I use absolutely no fillers, it's best to warm the lotion back up and mix it back together from time to time if you aren't using all the lotion before it separates. This will happen more often if the lotion is stored in a bathroom setting where temperatures fluctuate. Set the jar in a bowl of hot water for 20 minutes at a time until it melts down, then mix it with a milk frother. Sometimes you'll have to warm it up more than once to get it soft enough to mix. Generally, keep it stored in a cool, dry place and mix it back together if it does separate. For potency, use this lotion within 12 months of opening it.
- 10 drops of valerian oil, not 1. The only difference between this and the Sleep Zzz lotion is that Sleep Zzz has 1 drop of valerian oil and this lotion has 10.
- Built for the rebuilding phase. This lotion is for those who, like me, couldn't get to sleep and/or stay asleep. Super high cortisol levels need to be adjusted over time, bad habits need to be broken over time, diet, etc., but what we can do is mitigate some of those issues by getting a solid pattern of sleep. Even if that sleep isn't the best sleep, the most important thing is to be able to fall asleep and wake at the same time and without chemical components leaving us off for the whole day, whether we are aware of it or not. Use this lotion until you have a solid pattern of sleep and just need a better quality of sleep.
- Valerian has a real literature. A meta-analysis of 60 studies in nearly 6,900 people found valerian preparations supported subjective sleep quality and a settled mind, with inconsistent results the authors put down to variable extract quality.
- Same base as the rest. Our entire lineup of Magnesium and MSM Lotions has a base of mostly shea butter, hemp seed oil, Zechstein magnesium, and MSM, so you can use any of them topically to support pain, discomfort, tight muscles, joint issues, low magnesium, cramps, energy, and so much more. Three pooled trials in older adults found oral magnesium shortened time to fall asleep by about 17 minutes; this is the topical form of the same mineral.
- You'll know when to move on. When you need the sleep help, valerian is amazing in abundance, but you will know when the time to move on is, because it will leave you feeling a little heavy in the morning when you don't need it.
- Magnesium relaxes tissues, so applying this lotion to any areas with pain, discomfort, tension, etc., should support them. Magnesium is responsible for 3,751 proteins/enzymes, and therefore we can expect using this lotion will support those.
- Straight past the gut. Magnesium is also used to make every unit of our energy, so using it topically skips the digestive tract and deposits the magnesium directly into our blood. This is extremely helpful for those who can't handle much magnesium orally.
- What clients tell us. Many clients report feedback about the support it gives to their skin, energy, gut, anxiety, irritability, and overall mood, amongst other things.

Sourcing & making
Every jar in this line is the same base: organic shea butter, lab-tested hemp seed oil, genuine Zechstein magnesium chloride, my deuterium-depleted distilled water, MSM, and beeswax. The only difference between the lotions is the essential oil blend in each one. I source high-grade oils and blend specific oils to help with certain ailments. Beeswax holds the water and butter phases together, so there is no synthetic emulsifier in it.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) oil / root
Valerian root and sleep meta-analysis, 2020
Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine · 2020 · meta-analysis · n=60 studies, 6,894 participants
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 60 studies in 6,894 people found oral valerian root preparations improved subjective sleep quality and reduced anxiety scores with inconsistent results attributed to variable extract quality, and reported no severe adverse events in people aged 7 to 80.
Genuine Zechstein Magnesium Chloride (magnesium)
Magnesium and sleep-onset meta-analysis, 2021
BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies · 2021 · meta-analysis · n=3 RCTs, 151 participants
A meta-analysis of three randomized trials in 151 older adults found oral magnesium shortened time taken to fall asleep by 17.36 minutes versus placebo (p=0.0006), with no significant change in total sleep time and low-to-very-low quality underlying evidence.
Genuine Zechstein Magnesium Chloride (transdermal magnesium)
Effect of transdermal magnesium cream on serum and urinary magnesium levels in humans: A pilot study
PLOS ONE · 2017 · RCT · n=25 enrolled, 24 completed
In a single-blind, parallel-group pilot trial of 25 adults, applying a magnesium cream supplying 56 mg of magnesium daily for two weeks raised serum magnesium by 8.54% versus 2.6% with placebo, reaching statistical significance only in the non-athlete subgroup.
Evidence note: Valerian has a meta-analysis of 60 studies in nearly 6,900 people behind subjective sleep quality, and magnesium a small meta-analysis behind falling asleep about 17 minutes faster. Both bodies of evidence used oral preparations, and both sets of authors call for better-standardized extracts and larger trials. Valerian oil applied to skin is the open question; here it is the scent of the jar.
FAQ
What's different between this and Sleep Zzz?
Valerian load. Sleep Zzz has 1 drop of valerian oil; this lotion has 10. The rest of the blend and the entire base are the same.
Why valerian?
Valerian root has centuries of use as an evening botanical, and a meta-analysis of 60 studies in nearly 6,900 people found valerian preparations supported subjective sleep quality and a settled mind; the authors traced the spread between trials to differences in extract quality. When you need the sleep help, valerian is amazing in abundance.
Why does it feel heavy in the morning?
When you need the sleep help, valerian is amazing in abundance, but you will know when the time to move on is, because it will leave you feeling a little heavy in the morning when you don't need it. That's the cue to switch to Sleep Zzz.
How much magnesium gets through skin?
A randomized trial saw serum magnesium rise after two weeks of daily magnesium cream. People use it for how it feels on tired muscles and skin - work it into a shoulder, a calf, or the bottoms of the feet.
Why did my jar separate?
No fillers and no heavy emulsifier, so the water and butter phases drift apart, faster in a warm bathroom. Sit the jar in hot water about 20 minutes, then remix with a milk frother. Repeat if it's still firm. Nothing is wrong with it.
Can kids use it? What about pregnancy?
