Which magnesium, and why two of them?
Magnesium malate is our daytime magnesium. Magnesium bound to malic acid, a compound your cells use in energy production, so it fits the morning and the afternoon rather than the pillow.
- People who want daytime energy support without a stimulant
- Anyone raising their magnesium intake across the day in small split doses rather than one large one
- Start with 1 capsule at breakfast and 1 at lunch.
- Over time, you may increase to 2 capsules per meal.
- For best absorption, take 1 capsule, then a second one an hour later if desired. This approach also helps increase intake without discomfort.
- Keep this one before mid-afternoon; use Magnesium Bis-Glycinate for the evening.
- As a general reference, adults may need approximately 5 mg of magnesium per pound of body weight daily, spread across multiple doses.
- For children: this product may be used at a reduced serving by opening the capsule and starting with a partial amount (¼–½ capsule), mixed into food or drink. Always adjust based on age and size, and consult with a pediatrician before use.
- Magnesium runs the engine. 3,751 human proteins bind magnesium (the human magnesome), including the ones that make ATP, the energy currency of every cell.
- Supports normal muscle and nerve function. The reason people reach for magnesium after a long day of tension, workouts, or screens.
- Malate is the daytime pairing. Many people choose Magnesium Malate during the day to help support mental clarity, energy, and overall daytime functions. Malic acid is part of the cycle cells use to produce energy, so this form is the one we use before dark. For evening use, see our Magnesium Bis-Glycinate for Calming and Sleep.
- Built for splitting. Small capsules, taken with meals, so you can raise your total intake without the digestive upset that comes from one big dose.
- What people report. Customer feedback highlights support for energy, alertness, and focus throughout the day. Many find it helps maintain steady performance without the fatigue or drowsiness often linked to low magnesium.

Magnesium malate (magnesium + malic acid)
Magnesium-malic acid crossover trial, 1995
The Journal of Rheumatology · 1995 · RCT · n=24
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover pilot in 24 adults tested a fixed low dose of a magnesium/malic acid tablet during the blinded phase; in the open-label phase, a higher dose was associated with reduced pain and tenderness scores. Dose appears to matter, and larger trials are the next step.

Physiological Reviews · 2015 · mechanistic review
A comprehensive physiology review describing magnesium as the second most abundant intracellular cation and a required cofactor across a wide range of enzymatic reactions, including ATP-dependent energy metabolism in brain, heart and skeletal muscle.

Nutrients · 2017 · narrative review
A review of animal and human evidence reporting positive associations between magnesium status and measures of muscle strength and physical performance, with intervention results varying by dose and population and larger human trials still to come.

The human “magnesome”: detecting magnesium binding sites on human proteins
BMC Bioinformatics · 2012 · computational proteome-wide analysis
A proteome-wide computational analysis annotating magnesium binding sites across the human proteome. Using 251 structural clusters as templates, the authors identified 3,751 human proteins carrying putative magnesium binding sites - about 13,689 binding residues in all - and called that set the human magnesome.
Evidence note: Strong for magnesium as a nutrient: a large mechanistic base plus human data on energy metabolism, muscle and nerve function. Magnesium malate specifically has one small crossover pilot behind it; head-to-head absorption trials between magnesium forms are still to come.
FAQ
Why magnesium during the day instead of all at night?
Absorption per dose is limited and one large dose is what causes loose stools. Splitting across meals raises your total for the day with less upset. This is the daytime slot; glycinate is the evening slot.
Malate, citrate, or glycinate: how do I pick?
Malic acid is part of the cycle cells use to make ATP, which is why we put malate in the morning and afternoon. Bis-glycinate is the evening form. Citrate moves the bowels more, which some people want and some don't.
Will it keep me awake?
It isn't a stimulant. Some people find malate feels more 'awake' than glycinate, which is why we place it in the morning and afternoon. Try it and see where it fits.
How do I count this with my lotion or bath?
Add everything up. People use lotions and baths for how they feel; capsules are the number you can count precisely.
Pairs well with
- Magnesium Bis-Glycinate — the evening form
- Adrenal Cocktail — potassium and vitamin C alongside your magnesium
- Salt of Life — high-mineral, high-electrolyte sea salt with every meal
Cautions
- Too much magnesium, or too much at once, may cause loose stools.
- Increase slowly and spread doses throughout the day.
- Consult your healthcare professional before use if pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a medical condition.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Best if used within 12 months of opening.
