The research behind the ingredients
Published research on the ingredients in this product, for education. These studies were not conducted on this product.
Cod liver oil (EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids)
The influence of dietary and supplemental omega-3 fatty acids on the omega-3 index: A scoping review
Frontiers in Nutrition · 2023 · systematic review · n=58 original research articles
Reviewing 58 studies, the authors report that about 1,000-1,500 mg/day of combined EPA and DHA for at least 12 weeks is the intake most consistently associated with reaching an omega-3 index of 8% or more, and that triglyceride-form oils are absorbed better than ethyl esters.
Naturally occurring vitamin D in cod liver oil
Vitamin D daily dose review, 2024
Nutrients · 2024 · mechanistic review
Reviewing supplementation trials, the authors report that 2000 IU (50 µg) of vitamin D daily keeps serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D above 50 nmol/L in more than 99% of adults and above 75 nmol/L in more than 90%, without safety signals in multi-year randomized trials.
Naturally occurring vitamin A (retinol) in cod liver oil
Vitamin A forms and sources review, 2021
Nutrients · 2021 · mechanistic review
This review reports that liver carries tens of milligrams of retinol and retinyl esters per 100 g, that retinyl esters from animal foods are almost completely absorbed when eaten with fat, and that vitamin A is required for rhodopsin formation, gene regulation, immune function and cell differentiation.
Evidence note: Strong at the nutrient level: vitamin A, vitamin D and long-chain EPA/DHA each have substantial randomized human evidence, and FIQ's panel now publishes the per-softgel amounts (375 mcg vitamin A, 3.4 mcg vitamin D, 37 mg EPA, 36 mg DHA), so a serving can be compared directly against those trial intakes. The trials studied the nutrients rather than this particular oil.
