The research behind the ingredients
Published research on the ingredients in this product, for education. These studies were not conducted on this product.
Naturally occurring vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) in wheat germ oil
Nutrients · 2022 · meta-analysis · n=17 randomized controlled trials included in the pooled analysis
Pooling 17 randomized trials using 300-1,318 IU/day of vitamin E, doses of 500 IU or less lowered post-exercise creatine kinase (SMD -1.94), most clearly in trained participants measured immediately after exercise, while effects on inflammatory markers were minimal.
Free alpha-tocopherol, the form present in wheat germ oil, versus the acetate ester used in most supplements
Nutrients · 2021 · in vitro
In differentiated Caco-2 intestinal cells given equal amounts of each form in mixed micelles, free alpha-tocopherol was secreted across the cell layer at 1.45% versus 0.99% for alpha-tocopherol acetate (p < 0.001) and 0.15% for TPGS (p < 0.0001).
Wheat germ oil
Wheat Germ Glycerides and Wheat Gluten, Wheat Flour and Wheat Starch, and Wheat Germ Oil
International Journal of Toxicology · 2003 · mechanistic review
This Cosmetic Ingredient Review safety assessment of wheat-derived ingredients, including wheat germ oil, concluded the ingredients are acceptably safe as used in cosmetics, and documented that the wheat protein fractions gliadin and glutenin - and immune responses to them in susceptible people - belong to the gluten portion rather than the oil.
Evidence note: Vitamin E as a nutrient has pooled randomized-trial evidence behind it, and the form question - free alpha-tocopherol versus the acetate ester - rests on a controlled intestinal cell study. Wheat germ oil itself is characterised by composition analyses rather than by its own human trial, and FIQ's panel publishes 500 mg of oil per softgel without a milligram figure for vitamin E, which is what would let a serving be matched to the trial intakes.
FAQ
Who makes this?
Formula IQ, Morley Robbins' line, where it is sold as Wheat Germ IQ. We resell it as the manufacturer supplies it; the description, panel, directions, and warnings on this page are FIQ's.
How much vitamin E is in a softgel?
FIQ's panel lists Wheat Germ Oil at 500 mg per softgel and does not print a separate vitamin E amount. FIQ describes the oil as a complete source of vitamin E containing gamma tocopherol.
Isn't wheat germ oil a seed oil?
It is pressed from the germ of the wheat berry, so yes, it is a plant oil. Our no-seed-oils line is about refusing them as cooking fats, carriers, and fillers. This is 500 mg taken by the softgel, extracted without heat rather than refined.
Is it gluten-free?
FIQ's guidance: those with celiac disease should consult healthcare providers due to potential cross-contamination risk. The oil is made from organic, non-GMO wheat.
Why refrigerate it?
Store it in a refrigerator after opening to maintain freshness.
What kind of softgel is it?
Beef gelatin, with glycerin and purified water, per the manufacturer's Other Ingredients line.
Pairs well with
- FIQ Cod Liver Oil (Morley) — vitamins A and D, the other two fat-solubles
- FIQ Recuperate (Copper & Boron) — copper, which the body's own antioxidant enzymes depend on
- Camu Camu Powder — whole-food vitamin C alongside the vitamin E
